Google Traffic Report Card-Does Your Website Pass? Part 1

Google

This is part 1 of a 7 part series that examines the 7 factors of incoming links that Google considers when choosing a spot for your website in it's SERP's.

Why incoming links? First because these are what Google places the maximum value on. But, all incoming links are NOT created identical. This 7 part course looks at the kinds of links Google values when "rating" your website in the SERP's. Each type of link discussed is significant to your on the whole link approach and accordingly your free traffic levels.

The first factor is of course the newscaster text used in your incoming links. The significance of the keywords used to link to your website are more important to Google than the content that is in point of fact on your page. You can generally use anchor link text with your keywords and not even have the keywords on the page and still get a good ranking in Google for that term if enough incoming links have that keyword pharse in them.

If you've heard of the phrase "Google Bombing" then you know what I'm talking about. Essentially it's when a set of webmasters or blog owners decide to get a page ranked for a certain term and all leave links back to the selected site with the keyword phrase that they want that page to rank for.

The "Google Bombing" was done by at most a few hundred links with this link text pointing to the page. Though more links would in all probability be necissary for a more competative term. Still, it goes to show how important link text is to the rankings of a page.

Google Bombing is nothing new. But what many people don't realize is that Google places more application on the anchor link text that it finds when it first discovers a link to your website. Each consequential link either adds value to that first consciousness or subtracts from it.

Many times you can control which link Google finds first just by knowing where Google goes recurrently and effectively placing your link in its path. This is called "baiting" the Google bot to visit your website through this link.

Each link you place after this preliminary link should supplementary show Google that their first thought was and still is correct. Each subsiquent link is a "vote" so to speak to corroborate Google's original thought of what your website is about.

Placing that first link to be found by Google is only the first step, but a very important one. Choose your anchor text keywords vigilantly. Each incoming link you place after this one should serve to make lawful this first impression.

How To Protect Your Search Engine Rankings

Your website's ranking on search engines is a vital element of your overall marketing campaign, and there are ways to improve your link popularity through legitimate methods. Unfortunately, the Internet is populated by bands of dishonest webmasters seeking to improve their link popularity by faking out search engines.

The good news is that search engines have figured this out, and are now on guard for "spam" pages and sites that have increased their rankings by artificial methods. When a search engines tracks down such a site, that site is demoted in ranking or completely removed from the search engine's index.

The bad news is that some high quality, completely above-board sites are being mistaken for these web page criminals. Your page may be in danger of being caught up in the "spam" net and tossed from a search engine's index, even though you have done nothing to deserve such harsh treatment. But there are things you can do - and things you should be sure NOT to do - which will prevent this kind of misperception.

Link popularity is mostly based on the quality of sites you are linked to. Google pioneered this criteria for assigning website ranking, and virtually all search engines on the Internet now use it. There are legitimate ways to go about increasing your link popularity, but at the same time, you must be scrupulously careful about which sites you choose to link to. Google frequently imposes penalties on sites that have linked to other sites solely for the purpose of artificially boosting their link popularity. They have actually labeled these links "bad neighborhoods."

You can raise a toast to the fact that you cannot be penalized when a bad neighborhood links to your site; penalty happens only when you are the one sending out the link to a bad neighborhood. But you must check, and double-check, all the links that are active on your links page to make sure you haven't linked to a bad neighborhood.

The first thing to check out is whether or not the pages you have linked to have been penalized. The most direct way to do this is to download the Google toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com. You will then see that most pages are given a "Pagerank" which is represented by a sliding green scale on the Google toolbar.

Do not link to any site that shows no green at all on the scale. This is especially important when the scale is completely gray. It is more than likely that these pages have been penalized. If you are linked to these pages, you may catch their penalty, and like the flu, it may be difficult to recover from the infection.

There is no need to be afraid of linking to sites whose scale shows only a tiny sliver of green on their scale. These sites have not been penalized, and their links may grow in value and popularity. However, do make sure that you closely monitor these kind of links to ascertain that at some point they do not sustain a penalty once you have linked up to them from your links page.

Another evil trick that illicit webmasters use to artificially boost their link popularity is the use of hidden text. Search engines usually use the words on web pages as a factor in forming their rankings, which means that if the text on your page contains your keywords, you have more of an opportunity to increase your search engine ranking than a page that does not contain text inclusive of keywords.

What is robots.txt File and How to Best Use it For Your Benefit?

Duplicate content is a big threat to a SEO company as it can affect the ranking of a site but in certain cases it becomes necessary to put up such content on the site especially when you want to provide the printable version of a particular page to the viewers. You might be thinking if there is a way to avoid the search engines from indexing a page and the answer is the robots.txt HTML code.
What is robots.txt File and How to Best Use it For Your Benefit? For those who are new to SEO when the robot.txt file command appears before a page it instructs the search engines to stay away from that page. This command is especially useful when there are same pages on the site or some sensitive data which you do not want to be public. Images, javascript and stylesheets can be excluded from indexing using this command this will also save on bandwidth.

It should be understood that robots.txt is a mere instruction for the search engines and it will be very foolish if you use it for sensitive data. If in case the search engines are not able to locate the robots file then there are all possibilities that the data is indexed by them. So it is better to use a combination of methods for protecting sensitive data.

It should be known that the search engines do not search the whole site to find the robots.txt file but the main directory located here www.mysite.com/robots.txt. The robots.txt should be located in the main directory for the search engines to find it and do not index the files you do not want to be indexed. If it is not so placed then you cannot blame the search engines for indexing all the pages.

Search Engine Spider, What is It?

Everybody connected to the Web has heard the term “Search Engine Spider.” From its name, its not difficult to understand its nature in general, but let’s investigate it in a bit more detail. A Search Engine Spider (also known as “robot”, “crawler” and “worm”) is an integral component of Crawler-based Search engines as it separates them from another type of search engines – Human-powered. Crawler-based search engines observe websites with the help of special programs called “search engine spiders.” They surf the infinite space of the Internet looking for the recently created pages and for updates of the pages already indexed. Search Engine Spiders crawl their way through links both inside the site and between websites. If your site has no incoming links, the only way to invite the Search Engine Spider is to take advantage of suggestion the site by yourself; the majority Crawler-based search engines allow it.

The information gathered by Search Engine Spiders gets to the Index – the second element of Crawler-based search engines. Index is a huge knowledge box, concentrating the copies of all the pages found by Search Engine Spiders treated as relevant by Search Engine. However, don’t take for granted that if the page is found by Search Engine Spider, it will be indexed promptly.

The third element of every Crawler-based Search Engine is the software, which scans the Index and presents the consecutive list of the most relevant pages on your query. As Search Engine Spiders constantly surf the Web, they inform the Index about changes, which influences on the posterior ranking according to the cherished Algorithm.

Of course, every Search Engine has its own algorithm, and all Search Engine Spiders are tuned differently. However, if you desire to rank highly in Crawler-based search engines, just remember that the value will be given not by a man and that even the unsurpassed design will not be appreciated by impartial Search Engine Spider.

What is the very high bid keyword

How do you decide between making sites for very high bid keyword
niches (cancer or whatever) that are extremely competitive for traffic vs
less competitive topic niches that have lower potential click fees?

A: I make sites for competitive niches and niches without much competition at all.

It’s much harder to profit with a site that has a lot of competition. So is what you
need to decide is:

1. Do you want to make money with a few sites.

2. Do you want to make money with a lot of site.

If you choose option one, you can go for the more competitive niches. They take
much more time and work, but you only have to have a few of them to make
good money.

If you choose option two, go for niches with little or no competition. You don’t
have to work as hard, but you have to build more sites to make money.

Google will remove all search queries after 18 to 24 months

IIn a nod to privacy advocates, Google com. said Wednesday that they will adopting a new data retention policy so that it's harder to link users to what they search for online. Under the plan, the Mountain View Internet company will shroud the information it collects about users in anonymity, eliminating a potential treasure trove of evidence for government search warrants and subsistances.

By the end of 2007, Google expects to purge important identifying information on its computer servers about the sources of virtually all search queries after 18 to 24 months.

Subsequently, the company will have access to only partial records, so that no one can trace the queries back to individual users.

Google's move is intended to comply with various foreign laws and proposed legislation dictating that Web sites must keep user information for up to two years in case it is needed for legal proceedings. Similar rules are under consideration in the United States.

Google is the first major search engine to set a time limit for retention of search information, which can reveal a great deal about an individual such as whether they're sick (as indicated by a number of queries about cancer) and political affiliation (demonstrated by searches for certain blogs).

Until now, the company kept search logs indefinitely, raising criticism that the data could be misused by Google, law enforcement or marketers. Google said the changes are in response to feedback from privacy groups and government agencies, including the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, which raised concerns about Google's existing practices. The new policy, Google said, provides more transparency to users about data retention and better protects their privacy.

Kurt Opsahl, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group, gave measured praise to Google's decision, calling it a step in the right direction.

He asked that Google similarly purge information collected about users of its other products, such as YouTube. Retention of search records emerged as a hot-button issue last year after a demand by the Justice Department that several Web sites turn over query data became public.

Yahoo Inc., Time Warner's AOL and Microsoft Corp. handed over the information, to the consternation of many privacy advocates, but Google fought the request in court and ultimately got the amount it had to provide reduced.

Separately, AOL made a high-profile blunder by posting 19 million search queries online as part of a research project. Ostensibly anonymous, the information was used to identify some of the users responsible for the queries, prompting a public apology by the Web site and a series of resignations.

"By taking some technical measures to anonymize this data, there is an extra layer of protection," Opsahl said. "You can't disclose what you don't have."

As part of the new policy, Google will erase eight of the bits that make up an Internet Protocol address, known commonly as an IP address, that identifies the computer used to make a search query. It will also make cookies -- the small files that help track user visits to specific Web sites and preferences -- anonymous.

After the plan is implemented, Google intends to keep the partial records and associated search query terms, explaining that the information will help the company improve its services and help detect fraud.

Know Some Facts about Search Engine Spam

There is a very thin line of difference between search engine optimisation practised by white collars and black hats. Most of the spammers use various black tricks to outrun the real white collars work. So it better to learn the difference between white-hat and black-hat techniques.
The first thing to know is what is considered as spam? It has been defined by most of the search engines as the pages created deliberately to trick the search engine by offering inappropriate or poor quality search results. It is always advisable for every site owner to ask certain questions related to its content and their various optimisation techniques. The site owners should be aware that the content of the site greatly benefits the target audience and site browsers whereas it is not only for getting page ranks in the search engines. Here are some of the ways of search engine spam Keywords unrelated to site Redirects Keyword stuffing Mirror/duplicate content Tiny Text Doorway pages Link Farms Cloaking Keyword stacking Gibberish Hidden text Domain Spam Hidden links Mini/micro-sites Page Swapping (bait &switch) Typo spam and cyber squatting Major search engines take spam seriously and put in great efforts to eliminate spam techniques. We can also find a thin line between optimisation and over optimisation. Thus, aggressive and sophisticated techniques need to be applied for removing this type of spamming. So if you are going spamming then always remember that in the long run it is not beneficial and it seems that you are not going for page rank. Just has been also proven that aggressive marketing is done in businesses such as gambling, casino, travel, wine and other products compare to other less-competitive categories. There are certain ways to report search engine spam All the major search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo have dedicated spam reporting systems in place and you can know more by just visiting the sites. A site is considered as spam when it uses techniques in a determined manner to subvert the search engine’s algorithms, to artificially inflate their search engine ranking and if they are caught then nobody can help them out.

In Google, for instance, inbound links are king, so simply optimizing what is on your webpage will not go far in Google. Paid Links | Affect Goolge Ranking?

Many websites on the Internet will link to your website if you pay them for the links. Is this a good method to increase the link popularity of your website or can you get in trouble if you use paid links?

What does Google think about paid links?

Google is very clear about paid links. They don't like them. Google even has an official form that enables webmasters to report paid links to Google:

"Google and most other search engines use links to determine reputation. A site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to it.

Link-based analysis is an extremely useful way of measuring a site's value, and has greatly improved the quality of web search. Both the quantity and, more importantly, the quality of links count towards this rating.

However, some SEOs and webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links that pass PageRank, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results."

A recent problem

A webmaster recently reported problems in Google's webmaster discussion forum:

"Today I found that my entire site has dropped out of site in search results. I have a site that received over 2,000 search visits per day and today that has stopped."

It turned out that the website has many affiliate links and other links to advertisers that looked like paid links to Google. Unfortunately, these links were not marked as paid links and Google penalized the website for having the paid links.

What does this mean for your website?

You should avoid paid links if you don't want to get in trouble with Google. If you do buy or sell links, make sure that the links contain the rel="nofollow" attribute. By using that attribute, you show that the paid link is for advertising purposes only and that you don't want to manipulate your website rankings with the link.

While Google doesn't like paid links at all, they also make clear that links are very important:

"Link-based analysis is an extremely useful way of measuring a site's value, and has greatly improved the quality of web search. Both the quantity and, more importantly, the quality of links count towards this rating."

For that reason, you should try to get as many good links to your website as possible. The quality is more important than the quantity.

Links that point to your website are a very important factor that influences the position of your website in Google's search results. The links that point to your website should be from related websites and they should contain the keywords for which you want to get high rankings.

Do not manipulate the links to your website by buying links and do not join automated link systems to increase the number of links to your website. There are many ways to get good links (related websites, blogs, social bookmark sites, directories, etc.).

The Sky's The Limit With Yahoo Web Hosting's Unlimited Platform

If you've been online long, you may remember when web hosting was limited. Many companies charged as much as $30 or even $40 per month for fifty megabytes of storage. Bandwidth was equally limited, and if your account went over its limits, your account was suspended until you paid to increase your limits. Unlimited hosting, like that from Yahoo web hosting, was unheard of until quite recently.

Some web hosts still limit bandwidth and usage. Yahoo Web Hosting offers an unlimited hosting plan that allows you to create, and host, a content-filled, user-oriented web site. If your site gets featured on a popular blog, or hits the front page of Digg, many web hosts will shut your site down for overrunning its bandwidth limits. With Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting, your site's popularity will only attract more web visitors!

With broadband connections becoming the rule rather than the exception, and video becoming nearly a necessity for business sites, limited web hosting is a problem. Yahoo web hosting has the answer to that problem. No matter how many video files you want to store, how many times they are accessed, or how much email you get and receive, your account will always be ready to handle it.

The matter of email storage is important. You want to use a company email address, with your company's domain, and maintain an appearance of professionalism. But many web hosts have limits (10 megabytes is common) on the amount of email stored for each address. Yahoo web hosting does not limit your communication with your customers. Send and receive as much email as you like. Yahoo Small Business unlimited hosting includes unlimited email storage.

Your business's growth online depends on your ability to provide the best, and most complete, information to your customers. Storage limits can make it difficult to include as much information as you would like, including video, audio and graphics. With unlimited hosting from Yahoo web hosting, you can put up as many PDF files, as many audios and videos, and as many graphics as you desire. Yahoo Small Business allows you unlimited file storage. If you've ever had a limited hosting account, you'll understand the value of this unlimited storage from Yahoo web hosting.
